For King & Conscience: John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount Dundee

John Graham of Claverhouse is one of the great figures of Scottish history. To his supporters he will always be 'Bonnie Dundee', first and most romantic of the Jacobite rebels, leading his Highlanders at the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689 and dying, tragically, at the moment of victory. To his enemies, the Presbyterian Covenanters, he is 'Bluidy Clavers', accused of appalling atrocities and still spoken of with bitterness in the west of Scotland, wher his reputation is etched in folk memory and on crumbling gravestones throughout the shires of Dumfries, Ayr and Galloway.
